Dear Fairfielders,
Thank you for your engagement and advocacy following our recent email about the lack of transparency and accountability in Town Hall. Your efforts prompted over 100 emails to the Board of Finance, which in turn compelled the Administration to address these issues at Tuesday’s Board of Finance meeting. While progress was made, the conversation is far from over.
At last night’s meeting, Fairfield’s First Selectman admitted to violating the Town Charter by creating and operating a new Capital Planning and Operations Department without *first seeking approval from the Representative Town Meeting (RTM), as required by the Town Charter. He bypassed this critical step, instead opting to move forward under the radar, with the apparent plan to slip this department into next year’s budget for retroactive approval. With Democrats controlling all three boards—RTM, Board of Selectmen, and Board of Finance—he fully expected it to pass without scrutiny.
This strategy demonstrates not only a blatant disregard for our Town Charter but also an alarming level of arrogance, lack of transparency, and disregard for Fairfield taxpayers. While this new department may have merit, it was created in direct violation of the Charter’s required process. Key questions remain unanswered:
What are the long-term economic implications of these changes?
How will they affect taxpayers beyond the vague claims of short-term savings?
What other decisions are being made without proper oversight?
Despite these serious concerns, the Democrat-controlled Board of Finance failed to take decisive action to hold the Administration accountable. This is unacceptable – and it’s time to take action. To make this happen, we need the RTM to add this item to their agenda.
How You Can Help
Please take a moment to email the RTM and urge them to:
Add the unauthorized creation of the Capital Planning and Operations department to their agenda for formal review and approval.
Demand transparency regarding the costs, staffing, and justification for this new department.
Ensure that no further budgetary or structural changes occur without following the Town Charter’s process.
Fairfield thrives when we work together to hold our officials accountable. Let’s ensure our voices continue to drive meaningful change and keep taxes in check by demanding transparency and accountability.
Thank you for your commitment to our community.
We hope you find this information helpful. Please contact us at rtc@fairfieldrtc.com with any questions, we always welcome hearing from you.
